From Conception to Birth...
In this online activity you are going to explore the major events in prenatal development. Your journey will begin with the union of the egg and sperm and will end with the birth of a human baby.
It is important that dental hygienists are knowledgeable about the development of the head, neck, oral cavity specifically. However, before we address those topics in class, a general understanding of prenatal development must be gained. The purpose of this web-based lesson is to give you a foundation of knowledge on which to build throughout the rest of the semester.

- Create a timeline demonstrating the time periods in which major developmental milestones occur.
Learning Objectives:

- Explain
why dental hygienists need a basic understanding of human development.
- Explain the major events in the preimplantation, embryonic, and fetal periods of prenatal development.
- Understand and use the terms zygote, morula, blastocyst, embryo, and fetus.
- Identify the length of time involved in each period of prenatal development.
- Explain what happens to the developing human in each of the first 4 weeks of pregnancy.
- List mature structures that are derived from the primitive tissues ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm.
- Define the word teratogen and give examples of agents that are teratogenic.
